Looking for a good book to read? Every week, ZODML spotlights three great books from our extensive collection to inspire readers to try out books they might not have previously heard of. The selections fall under three major categories – fiction, non-fiction and children and young adult literature – so there’s a book to suit every taste. Also check out our archives to see which books have been selected in the past.
Fiction: Season of Migration to the North by Tayeb Salih After years of study in Europe, the young narrator of Season of Migration to the North returns to his village along the Nile in the Sudan. It is the 1960s, and he is eager to make a contribution to the new postcolonial life of his country. Back home, he discovers a stranger among the familiar faces of childhood—the enigmatic Mustafa Sa’eed. Season of Migration to the North is a rich and sensual work of deep honesty and incandescent lyricism. In 2001 it was selected by a panel of Arab writers and critics as the most important Arab novel of the twentieth century. *Season of Migration to the North is one of ZODML's Must Read works of fiction. Winners Take All is a compilation of some of his writings – a selection of articles published in the Sunday Times and Daily Times between 1963 and 1969. Children and Young Adults: A is for Africa by Ifeoma Onyefulu Stunning colour photographs depict everyday life in Nigeria in this unusual 'ABC' book by a talented African photographer.
