2019 Brunel International African Poetry Prize Shortlist

Ten upcoming poets have been shortlisted for the 2019 Brunel International African Poetry Prize; with them are four Nigerian poets Inua Ellams, Selina Iwuh, Omotara James and Mary-Alice Daniel.

This year’s judging panel includes Egyptian poet Matthew Shenoda, Tunisian poet Leila Chatti, and South African poet Phillippa Yaa de Villiers. They considered about 1,000 entries

 The Shortlisted Ten

  • Mary-Alice Daniel (Nigeria)
  • Afua Ansong (Ghana)
  • Inua Ellams (Nigeria)
  • K. Eltinae (Nubian Sudan)
  • Omotara James (Nigeria)
  • Selina Nwulu (Nigeria)
  • Nadra Mabrouk (Egypt)
  • Emmanuel Oppong (Ghana)
  • Jamila Osman (Somalia)
  • Sherry Shenoda (Egypt)

Somalia’s Warsan Shire won The Brunel Prize in 2013, Ethiopia’s Liyou Libsekal in 2014, Sudan’s Safia Elhillo and Uganda’s Nick Makoha in 2015, Nigeria’s Gbenga Adesina and Chekwube O. Danladi in 2016, Nigeria’s Romeo Oriogun in 2017, and the trio of Somalia’s Momtaza Mehri, Nigeria’s Theresa Lola, and Ethiopia’s Hiwot Adilow in 2018.

The £3000 prize, sponsored by Brunel University London, is open to African poets worldwide who have not yet published a full poetry collection.

The winner will be announced on the 30th of May 2019.
