Netflix recently acquired the rights to the movie ‘Lion Heart’ by Genevieve Nnaji on its channel, this happened a day before the movie was premiered in Toronto; making ''Lion Heart'' the first original film from Nigeria to be owned by the American movie streaming platform.

Netflix, Inc. is one of the largest providers of movie content on the Internet. It currently boasts over 117.6 million subscribers and partners with content providers to license streaming rights for a variety of TV shows and movies.

This is a significant milestone for Nollywood because as a Netflix branded movie, it stands a better chance to go global because of its heavy promotion.

Set in Southeastern Nigeria, “Lionheart” captures the challenges of a female in a male-dominated industry. Adaeze is suddenly saddled with the responsibility of running her ailing father’s business, but her Uncle does not make it easy for her.

Genevieve Nnaji was invited to CNN as a guest of Richard Quest, on Tuesday, September 11, 2018. In her interview with Richard, she spoke about her movie, 'Lion Heart', its challenges and acceptance.

“I think the authenticity of the story which was what I loved about it, provided an environment where I could showcase the things that made me proud of our culture, our talent and our values”. She said

Genevieve also said that “For money, we had to self-fund unfortunately, we don't have adequate funding for movies that we actually intend to go global, there isn't that provision yet…''

She also explained that Nollywood has what it takes to go global but language is our only barrier.

Lion Heart Synopsis

Nnaji plays the role of Adaeze, a level-headed executive in her father's bus company, Lionheart Transport.

Time and again, Adaeze has proven her keen ability to make a profit and to manage the most heated situations.

But when her father (stalwart star Pete Edochie) falls ill, both she and her rival (Kalu Egbui Ikeagwu, boosting the marquee cast) are passed over in favour of Adaeze's less-than-suave uncle, Godswill (Nkem Owoh, who lights up the screen with his comic presence).

Determined to fight her way to the top, but not wanting to go against her father's wishes, Adaeze feels like the proverbial bus has left the station without her.

She must quickly shift gears, however, when she and Godswill discover that Lionheart is running on fumes, financially.

Together, they must come together to save the company and their family name.

Lion Heart features Nollywood Veterans like Kanayo O Kanayo, Onyeka Onwenu, Nkem Owoh, Pete Edochie and Steve Eboh. It also stars newer faces like Jemima Osunde, Yakubu Mohammed and Sani Muazu.

It is a must watch!
