This summer the New York Public Library has been celebrating reading with pictures tagged with the hashtag #IReadEverywhere. Authors, public figures, and individual readers from around the world have shared photos of the unique places in which they read their favourite pieces of writing on social media. This inspired us at ZODML to share some amazing photographs of people reading around the world (and right here in Nigeria!). Check out the gallery below:

RIP JD Okhai Ojeikere

We were saddened to hear of the passing of Nigerian photographer JD Okhai Ojeikere on February 2 after a brief illness (we've featured his work on the blog before). Ojeikere was known for his striking black and white images, encompassing over 1000 photographs of women's hairstyles and head ties (popularly known as gele) unique to Nigeria. His famous series Hairstyles was displayed as part of the 55th International Art Exhibition La Biennale di Venezia last year.

Ojeikere was born in Ovbiomu, Edo State in 1930. He bought his first camera - a Brownie D - in 1950 and began his formal career as a darkroom assistant at the Ministry of Information in Ibadan. After independence, he worked at Television House and for the West Africa Publicity agency in Lagos. He eventually opened his own studio - Foto Ojeikere - and also joined the Nigerian Arts Council (now the National Council for Arts and Culture) through which he organised festivals to promote artistic activities across the country.

Ayodele, ZODML's analytics guru, has been distracting herself with a fun design 'this or that':

It has been a long week – getting over the flu and the worst toothache ever, which turned to three root canals in one visit to the dentist – and I just wanted to do something that would get my mind off the pain in my jaw and the thought of having to go back to the dentist.

Benue Youth Carnival- ZODML Blog - Nigeria

The Benue Youth Cultural Carnival - launched in 2009 - is an annual event aimed at showcasing the rich and diverse cultural heritage of Benue's people and at promoting the state as a warm and hospitable tourism destination. The carnival - coordinated by the Office of the Governor through the Special Assistant on Youth and Student Affairs - took place most recently from December 15 to 30, 2012 in Makurdi, the state capital. Themed "the carnival for peace and unity," it underscored the importance of peaceful coexistence and harmonious relationships amongst people of various cultural backgrounds.
