On Friday, May 24th, 2024 we hosted our third book talk of the academic session and our second virtual book talk at ZODML. We were excited to have Ms. Miracle Emeka-Nkwor, the author of What Happened to Janet Uzor, as our guest.

What Happened to Janet Uzor is a murder mystery set in Port Harcourt, where Ms. Nkwor lives and is her debut novel. This book was distributed to senior secondary school students in Wahab Folawiyo Senior Secondary School and Akande Dahunsi Memorial High School.

Ms. Nkwor read two of her favorite parts of her book to the students who then asked her many questions about the book, her life and her writing journey; with one student wanting to know which character did Ms. Nkwor related the most, to which she replied “Ebere''

This book talk was special because Ms. Nkwor really took her time when addressing the students. She gave in-depth responses that left no stone unturned. After the Question and Answer section of the Book Talk was concluded, our Board of Trustee Member, Mrs. Ayo Obe read out the 5 shortlisted alternate endings from the students.

The students were creative and explored different topics, one even writing about mental health. After the winners were selected, Ms. Nkwor gave 5 tips to better writing,

  1. Keep writing
  2. Be hungry for knowledge
  3. Read
  4. Be open to criticism but reject rejection
  5. Ask yourself why you write

Prizes were awarded to all five shortlisted students…

The students were taken on a library tour as they were all given library cards. The event ended with refreshments being handed out. The Book Talk was a success and the students gained knowledge as they grew in their writing journey.
