Looking for a good book to read? Every week, ZODML spotlights three great books from our extensive collection to inspire readers to try out books they might not have previously heard of. The selections fall under three major categories – fiction, non-fiction and children and young adult literature – so there’s a book to suit every taste. Fiction: The Victims by Isidore Okpewho
Written to point out the ills of polygamy, The Victimstells the story of an unhappy woman, Nwabunor, whose husband, Obanua, marries a second wife because she has only one son for him, and the trouble that follows.
Non-Fiction: Zambia Shall Be Free by Kenneth Kaunda
This is the autobiography of Kenneth Kaunda, the first president of the Republic of Zambia who was in power from 1964 to 1991. The book also gives a brief historical account of the ancient and colonial history of the country.
Children and Young Adults: The Punaku Treasure by Jean Evans
Kif and Kumba, who were asked by their grandmother not to stop by pools or trees, ignore her advice out of exhaustion and are saved by their horse, Ebony, from being bitten by a dangerous black snake. In the process of trying to bury the snake, they dig up the ten-thousand-year old Punaku Treasure. Trouble starts when Kif and Kumba are kidnapped and the treasure stolen.
