Drama, Danger, Fear: #BookoftheWeek Picks - February 3, 2014
Looking for a good book to read? Every week, ZODML spotlights three great books from our extensive collection to inspire readers to try out books they might not have previously heard of. The selections fall under three major categories – fiction, non-fiction and children and young adult literature – so there’s a book to suit every taste. All of the books are available to borrow for free at our Community Library on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi. Be sure to check out our archives to see which books have been selected in the past.
Fiction: Nights of the Creaking Bed by Toni Kan Nights of the Creaking Bed is full of colourful characters involved in affecting dramas: a girl who is rejected in love because she has three brothers to look after; a middle aged housewife who finds love again but has an impossible decision to make; a young man who can’t get the image of his naked, beautiful mother out of his mind; a child so poor he has to hawk onions on Christmas Day - and many others. Non-Fiction: Climate of Fear by Wole Soyinka Climate of Fear explores the many facets of fear, which include the extensive and pervasive hold of religion and spirituality; fear spawned by intolerance (which in turn is birthed by ignorance) and the similarities between these and other forms of despotism. Children and Young Adults: The Long Arm of the Frog by Sunny Udonsi Betty is young and pretty. She craves a carefree life nurtured by her passion for romance novels and movies. She meets and falls in love with Pete, who is everything her romantic mind ever imagined. Peter, unknown to Betty, is a hardened criminal; a murderer and a fugitive running from the law and the Frog, his erstwhile gang leader. Emiko Omatshola (formerly the Frog) is a crack police inspector. Before he was absorbed into the police force he had been the leader of a gang of daredevil robbers. The very mention of his nickname drove fear into the hearts of even the brave. His one desire, his only measure of redemption, is to hunt Peter down and exert vengeance for the death of his younger brother. Share your #BookoftheWeek with us in the comments or by tweeting @ZODML!
