William Golding, English writer, Nobel Laureate and Man Booker Prize winner, was born on September 19, 1911. Golding is best known for his 1954 dystopian novel The Lord of the Flies which depicts the fate of a group of schoolboys stranded on an island whose attempt to govern themselves ends in tragedy. Listed as one of TIME Magazine's 100 best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005 and Modern Library's 100 Best Novels, it has become essential reading in schools across the world and has been adapted for film three times.
