Ken Saro-Wiwa, UI and a Girl Away From Home - #BooksoftheWeek: April 22, 2013
Every week, ZODML spotlights three great books from our extensive collection to inspire readers to try out books they might not have previously heard of. The selections fall under three major categories – fiction, non-fiction and children and young adult literature – so there’s a book to suit every taste. Also check out our archives and see what books have been selected in the past.
Fiction: Basi and Company by Ken Saro-Wiwa Basi is an exceptional man, in keeping with the best traditions of tricksters in Yoruba folklore, and a compelling depiction of the 'get-rich-quick' mentality. This contemporary retelling of classic African stories was the first book based on the hugely successful Nigerian comedy television series, which at its peak was watched by an estimated 30 million people. Non-fiction: Those Magical Years: The Making of Nigerian Literature at Ibadan (1948 -1966) by Robert M Wren In Ibadan six decades ago, a young group of men, women, African students and European teachers came together to start a university, the first in Nigeria. Within a few years, world famous, novels, plays, and poems had sprung forth from the University of Ibadan. Wren's study of Ibadan's literary output over the years captures those exciting and inspiring times. Children and Young Adults: Sugar Girl by Kola Onadipe Raila is missing from home under mysterious and unfortunate circumstances. She goes through horrific ordeals, first in the hands of a wicked witch and then a hunter. Will she survive and return home safely...and under what circumstances?
