The Romance of Signature Scents: Finding Your Personal Fragrance | Chinecherem Enujioke
Many of us have seen the deodorant trend where people complain about how people they meet while in transit or in a crowded space do not smell nice. The discussion around skincare and grooming focuses not just on looking but also smelling great. Some say it keeps them in a hug longer, and who does not want a warm hug?
For some, they prefer to not put on perfumes or deodorants. For others, it is a struggle to find something that feels ‘you,’ the signature scent. But what really is a signature scent?
A signature scent is a fragrance that one wears consistently and is associated with. Strikingly, consistency with a fragrance happens because of preference of that fragrance to other fragrances. For example, one may find Fragrance A more floral than Fragrance B, which may be more breezy. So, if they want to smell floral, they go for A, and when they use it consistently, people identify that fragrance on them or even use it as a marker for their presence. Thus, Fragrance A is the person’s signature scent.
Sometimes, because of financial circumstances or unavailability, one may wear a different fragrance from their preferred fragrance. But a signature scent is a signature scent because you always return to it after whatever rough ride happens. Vogue Arabia opines that knowing one’s signature scent is a badge of honor. This is true, as there are thousands of fragrances to choose from in the world of perfumes.
But how do you find your signature scent? Maison Crivelli’s founder, Thibaud Crivelli, a mastermind of fragrance blending, believes perfumes are powerful and an invisible form of self-expression. Now, you agree that where there is art, you will find artists, whether passive or active. Marilyn Monroe’s signature scent was Chanel No. 5, which she said she wore to bed; Lady Diana wore Diorissimo, while Ines de la Fressange wears Mitsouko, and Taylor Swift’s is Santos Blush by Tom Ford. ![]()
These are the steps in finding your signature scent:
- Understand the different fragrances there are and the families they are under.
- Find what represents your personality, something you would feel confident in. Try not to wear something because your favorite influencers wear it.
- Look up the silage. Is it eau de parfum, pure parfum, eau de toilette, or eau de cologne? This will help you know the retaining power.
- Experiment, experiment, experiment. Your life should not be boring. There are a lot of fragrances to try.
